Our first question is below, from one of our members who lives in Garstang.
What is the best way of detering slugs and snails from munching my hostas?
Answer (from Ken Green) - use a garlic spray.....to make it get a full garlic bulb, don't peel it, just crush it, boil it in a pint of water for 10 mins, strain the mix and make up to a pint again. Bottle it. Add one tablespoon to one gallon of water and use on your hostas leaves and soil.....also works with ligularia.
Using cold red bush tea on the soil near plants is another way of keeping slugs at bay (tip from Peter Foley).
I noticed today that my back lawn, which is a bit squelchy due to the recent thaw, has a lot of moss in among the grass. When is the best time to start getting rid of the moss, and what is the best way to do it? What kind of moss killer should I use? How sparingly do I use it, and then is it a case of waiting for the moss killer to take action and raking it out? Any help on this one please?
